Introduction to Slate Engraving

Slate is a stone that lends itself particularly well to engraving, providing excellent visual impact and contrast.

Engraving Techniques

Different engraving techniques can be used depending on the material and design. To engrave slate, a different laser beam wavelength is used than that used for wood. We are talking about 1064 nm (nanometres).

Image preparation

The chosen image must be processed to adapt it to the material and, above all, converted into a negative. Why? Because we are working on a black background such as slate, and anything dark in the original image must not be engraved! In this case, unlike wood engraving, what is engraved is white and not dark, so we need to think in reverse, which is why we need to invert the image into a negative.

In conclusion

Once the image has been calibrated, numerous tests are carried out until the predicted result is achieved!
